1. The Volumetric vs. Actual Weight Formula
Couriers charge whichever is higher: the physical gross weight on the scale or the volumetric (dimensional) weight.
Volumetric Weight (kg) = (Length cm x Width cm x Height cm) / 5000
(Note: Certain domestic cargo handlers use a divisor of 4,000 or 6,000 depending on transit mode).
- If a box weighs 2 kg on the scale but measures 40cm x 40cm x 40cm, its volumetric weight is 64,000 / 5,000 = 12.8 kg.
- You will be billed for 13 kg, not 2 kg. Always cut down exterior carton margins to fit the payload snugly.
2. Securing High-Value Shipments
Standard courier tariff rates include strictly limited baseline carrier liability—often capped at a minimal nominal sum per consignment regardless of real value.
- Declared Value for Carriage: For shipments exceeding standard thresholds (electronics, signed commercial contracts, luxury textiles), declare the true replacement value on the Airway Bill (AWB) and pay the supplementary 1% to 2% transit insurance premium.
- Pack-and-Seal Protocols: Never hand unsealed cartons to collection riders. Insist on tamper-evident security tape, record the unique numeric seal identifier on the receipt, and photograph the parcel at the collection counter.
